This beautiful 11 year old mixed breed gelding was born on a breeding farm in Thermopolis, Wyoming; bred to be a rodeo horse, a bucking Bronco in fact. From the brandings on his hind quarter we can see that he’s had a few homes over the course of his life, including a stay in Texas for a period of time. We believe that at some point in his adventures, he simply refused to buck. According to Jim Gay, a rodeo producer, “you can’t make a horse buck that doesn’t want to.” As a result, he was sent to the kill pen and subsequently rescued by a friend of Bearfoot Ranch founder, Darrith Russell. His new owner named him Zeus and set about training him at his new home. Unfortunately, after a time Zeus’s new owner found she didn’t have the skills needed to train him. The Power of Love already at work in this horse’s life, his owner sought out Darrith in the hopes that she could offer a better situation and better life for him. Darrith’s big heart and desire for him to have a new start at life brought this beautiful boy to Bearfoot Ranch in 2023 although, not without struggle, as it took several hours just to get him trailered. Once at Bearfoot, he was given his new name and new start! He was named Odin, perhaps for his frenzied appearance? For the first year, Odin basically spent life alone in a round pen decompressing from his past traumatic history. We’ve started this blog to document Odin’s life and his journey to recover from PTS.
